Identify the job of the equals sign
An expression such as 2x + 6 does not determine x. It can be factored or evaluated for a given x, but there is no unique solution to find until a condition is supplied. An equation such as 2x + 6 = 14 does supply one.
Equations can have no solution, one solution, several solutions or infinitely many. The expected answer format depends on the equation, not on a calculator promising a single number.
Preserve equivalent steps
Adding the same term to both sides preserves equality. Dividing by a known nonzero number preserves equality. Dividing by an expression that might be zero can remove valid solutions, so it requires a case check.
The linear solver deliberately accepts a limited grammar. General rational equations, radicals and trigonometric equations need additional reasoning beyond that input model.
Do not discard a possible zero
Consider x(x − 2) = 0. Dividing both sides by x would immediately lose x = 0, because division by zero is not permitted. Instead, apply the zero-product rule: at least one factor must be zero. This produces both x = 0 and x = 2. The method chosen can determine whether all solutions are retained.
LET’S WORK IT THROUGH
Solve 7x + 2 = 3x + 18.
- Subtract 3x: 4x + 2 = 18.
- Subtract 2: 4x = 16.
- Divide by 4.
THE ANSWERx = 4.
YOUR TURN
A small check for understanding.
Does 2x + 6 alone determine x?
Reveal the answer
No. It is an expression; an equation or another condition is needed.
Now try your own numbers.
