Volume uses cubic units
Volume measures three-dimensional space. A cube one centimeter on each side occupies one cubic centimeter. Converting cubic units requires cubing the linear conversion factor.
Do not confuse the outside dimensions of a container with its inside capacity. Wall thickness, curved ends and an incomplete fill can change the useful amount.
Choose the relevant dimensions
A cube needs one side length because all three dimensions are equal. A cylinder needs the radius of its circular base and its perpendicular height. A sphere needs its radius.
For a cylinder, think of volume as base area stacked through the height. This explains why πr² is multiplied by h rather than by another radius.
Check scale and physical meaning
Doubling every dimension of a shape multiplies volume by eight. Doubling only a cylinder’s height doubles its volume, while doubling only its radius multiplies volume by four.
The tool expects positive dimensions and returns cubic units without converting them. If you need liters, first establish whether the cubic result is in meters, centimeters or another unit.
LET’S WORK IT THROUGH
A cylinder has radius 3 cm and height 8 cm. Find its volume.
- The circular base area is π × 3² = 9π cm².
- Multiply by height: 9π × 8 = 72π cm³.
- Using π gives approximately 226.19 cm³.
THE ANSWER72π cm³, approximately 226.19 cm³.
YOUR TURN
A small check for understanding.
What is the volume of a cube with side 4 m?
Reveal the answer
64 m³, because 4 × 4 × 4 = 64.
Now try your own numbers.
