PERCENTAGES / ONE IDEA, WORKED THROUGH

Change a percentage into a decimal, including fractional rates

A percentage can already contain a decimal point; it still needs division by 100.

THE IDEA AT A GLANCE7.5% = 7.5 ÷ 100 = 0.075
01

Write the hidden denominator

The percent sign means “out of one hundred.” Thus 7.5% is the same quantity as 7.5/100. Dividing gives 0.075. Removing only the sign would leave 7.5, a number one hundred times too large.

Because 7.5% is between 0% and 100%, its decimal 0.075 lies between zero and one. Use that interval to check the placement of the decimal point.

02

Use the value in the right kind of field

A plain arithmetic expression needs the decimal multiplier: 240 × 0.075 = 18. The Percent of a number tool instead labels its field Percentage (%), so enter 7.5; it performs division by 100 for you.

Converting the rate before typing it into a percentage field applies the conversion twice. When a result seems one hundred times too small, check the field label before changing the formula.

03

Separate a share from a changed total

The share 18 is 7.5% of 240. If the question asks for an increase, add the share to the original to obtain 258. If it asks only for the part, stop at 18.

Check the reverse conversion: 0.075 × 100 = 7.5. This returns the numerical percentage, after which the % symbol is restored. Keep any rounding separate from this exact place-value conversion.

LET’S WORK IT THROUGH

Find 7.5% of 240.

  1. Convert the rate: 7.5 ÷ 100 = 0.075.
  2. Multiply: 240 × 0.075 = 18.
  3. Check the scale against a fraction of 240.

THE ANSWERThe requested share is 18.
