PERCENTAGES / ONE IDEA, WORKED THROUGH

Make a small percentage usable in a formula

Preserve all the zeros when a rate is less than one percent.

THE IDEA AT A GLANCE0.5% = 0.5 ÷ 100 = 0.005
01

Write the hidden denominator

The percent sign means “out of one hundred.” Thus 0.5% is the same quantity as 0.5/100. Dividing gives 0.005. Removing only the sign would leave 0.5, a number one hundred times too large.

Because 0.5 is less than 1, this percentage is less than one hundredth. Its decimal 0.005 must therefore be smaller than 0.01.

02

Use the value in the right kind of field

A plain arithmetic expression needs the decimal multiplier: 800 × 0.005 = 4. The Percent of a number tool instead labels its field Percentage (%), so enter 0.5; it performs division by 100 for you.

Converting the rate before typing it into a percentage field applies the conversion twice. When a result seems one hundred times too small, check the field label before changing the formula.

03

Separate a share from a changed total

The share 4 is 0.5% of 800. If the question asks for an increase, add the share to the original to obtain 804. If it asks only for the part, stop at 4.

Check the reverse conversion: 0.005 × 100 = 0.5. This returns the numerical percentage, after which the % symbol is restored. Keep any rounding separate from this exact place-value conversion.

LET’S WORK IT THROUGH

Find 0.5% of 800.

  1. Convert the rate: 0.5 ÷ 100 = 0.005.
  2. Multiply: 800 × 0.005 = 4.
  3. Check the scale against a fraction of 800.

THE ANSWERThe requested share is 4.

YOUR TURN

A small check for understanding.

Convert the decimal 0.005 back into a percentage.

Reveal the answer
